In 1999 I moved to Tuscaloosa, AL to finish up my undergrad degree and graduate degree at the University of Alabama after leaving West Point, I consider Alabama to be my second hometown (grew up in Houston, TX) since I lived here since 1999.  I currently live in Birmingham, AL which was also affected by tornados but I work at the Mercedes Benz plant in Tuscaloosa. The aftermath of this horrific storm has changed many lives. I have coworkers, friends, and classmates who are suffering from the lost of a family member or a close friend or home both in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.  My heart and thoughts are with Alabama as we try to rebuild our beloved state.  This has been a very difficult past two week for the state of Alabama, University of Alabama, and Tuscaloosa.  We need to do everything we can to get Alabama back to normal but it will never be the same after last week’s deadly tornados.  For those of you who did not see how scary things got in Tuscaloosa on April 27, 2011 here is footage from the tornado at the University Mall to show the enormity of what took place.

We need to do everything to support what is need to be done to get the community back to normal it’s going to take some time.  I end up not getting to race speed week NRC crits this y
ear because it is more important to stay back in Alabama and support the community I am not just a Paralympic cyclist and MB employee I am part of community & need support Alabama.  Until one lives through something like this you don’t really have a good feeling for personal devastation and how it affects people.  Once you experience and understand what one a tornado can do, it changes you forever.  DO NOT TAKE WEATHER THREATS CASUALLY! I have witness first hand you just can’t do it.  The thoughts and prayers of all Alabamians are with the victims of this disaster and their families during this difficult time.

I just got back from the 2011 UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships in Montichiari, Italy.  It was a successful trip because I podium in all my events.  I did not PR this year but I did my best because I suffering from bronchitis infection since Jan so I gave it everything I had.  The track also was cold so that did not help the situation.  It was amazing that I was able to pull of the double bronze under these conditions.  I did not get to see much of Italy only sites I saw were on my training rides or riding my bike over to velodrome.  But I did get plenty of Italian cappuccino while I was there. J I know that I will go  faster next  year with track worlds in the United States and Paralympic Games in London!

Cheers,

Jennifer

The World Cup in Segovia, Spain was amazing to climb on podium step twice was just crazy!  This was the first test to see how my form is for 2010.   The road race was up first.  It was one of the more challenging courses that I have experienced in Paralympic racing.  There were some tight turns and a lot of climbing on the course.  On the first lap, the peloton dropped half the field.  Only myself, Polish rider, and the Australian women were left.  On the second lap, the Polish rider and I were able to break away from Australian women.  We rode together for the rest of the race taking turns pulling until the final sprint in town square, and I was able to take the win.

The final race of the world cup the time trial was on Sunday.   I was not sure how I was going to do in the time trial. I have not had the chance to do a time trial this year because there had not been any time trials available locally, and I had a hard road race on Friday.   What made me even more nervous going into the TT was you could not have ask for a worse course for me so I thrilled when I found out I won the race against the clock.  The icing on the cake is I did it in a personal best time!

I am so excited how much is coming together to be the world cup leader going into World Championship this year.   In February, I was not sure how my season was going to turn out when I was involved in a really bad bike crash.   I wanted to be in mix of some really big races down south starting the last weekend in March but I was still bang up.  Lady luck had its toll on me as well with a couple of flats and crash so it was a slow start.  Though things started coming together right before the UCI world cup and my form is getting better as the season unfolds.   I am now in my final prep for Road World Championship in Baie-Comeau, Canada on August 19-22

Woo hoo I am no longer in offseason the 2010 race season is here! This is going to be a long season this year because road and track cycling worlds are split.  Track worlds are tentatively schedule for Nov/Dec timing.   The bad news is this means I am going to miss out on a good chuck of Alabama football again because I will be in my heaviest training block during SEC play so BAMA better make the national championship game again when I am finally in the offseason ROLL TIDE!

2010 is going to be full of challenges and eye opening experiences for myself and everyone supporting me.   My road and track cycling race schedule will be balanced with racing domestically in women’s Pro1/2 field and racing internationally with US Paralympic cycling team.  I am going to be tested a lot this year both on the track and the road.   One of the biggest changes in my training for 2010 is I am going to be going over to Atlanta more frequently and train on the Dick Lane Velodrome.   I have hired Jeff Hopkins to work with me as my home coach.   I could not have found a better match because Jeff was kilo world champion as a junior for Australia, and he just recently just retired from NRC racing circuit.  We have very similar racing strengths so I will really benefit from his experience.   What makes it even funnier I feel like I have hired a younger version of Craig Griffin (US Paralympic coach in COS who’s from New Zealand) or Griffin junior because of his accent and similar coaching traits.  It’s scary sometimes I wonder if I communicating with Jeff or Craig.

Other big news I have been named to PowerBar’s team elite.  I was so stocked when I got my weight in PowerBars and then some delivered to the house.  I can’t wait for Nestle to ask are you really eating all those PowerBars yourself are you supply a team because all my friends and coworkers know how many PowerBars I go through a week.  Balancing a fulltime job along with my cycling career, I consume a lot of PowerBars and PowerBar protein bars.  They are quick source of nutrition, and I know who important it is not to train on an empty stomach, continue to refuel during training, and consume quality recovery food after one works out.    I even had to tell the local bike shop in Birmingham that happens to be the only retailer in area that carries my favorite PowerBar the fruit smoothie berry flavor that I am being sponsored by power bar.  They told me to tell them that if I got sponsored by PowerBar they like a heads up so they would not have to place Jenny’s monthly PowerBar order.

I will continue to be supported by the following companies in 2010

Challenged Athletes Foundation Operation Rebound Supporting all who have served.    Operation rebound was a huge part of my success last year without their support.  It is a fact without their support I would not have won 3 world championships on road and track in 2009.

I will continue to be supplied with Rocktape.  Rock tape held me together last year when my spasticity got out of control towards the end of season.   As one of my teammates, said at worlds “You look like your being wrapped up like Christmas present.”   I would not have been able to perform at level I did at track worlds without rock tape supporting my legs.
